Audience research

Q magazine is one of the top rock and indie magazines today. Q magazine is under the same genre as our song choice although it also features rock music. The link will show their audience research and the current audiences who read their magazine. It is obvious this genre of magazine is male dominated with 75% percent reading it compared to only 25% females reading it. The median age of readers is 29, this doesn't mean we have to aim our music video at people aged 29 because indie music is such a wide genre, this is why people of all ages read Q magazine.

Questionnaire

What genre of music do you like?

What do you think of Pete Doherty?

What do you understand about Indie music?

What would come to mind when you pictured an Indie boy? E.g hair, clothes and accessories.

Adam
Here is Adam answering the questions to our questionnaire. Information from Q magazine is very good and accurate although using secondary research doesn't always answer exactly what you want to know. This is why we have also done some primary research, to answer the questions more specific to us.

Here you can see Pete Doherty's Facebook page for fans to 'like' so they can receive updates and news about Pete. I have 715 Facebook friends, from this only 15 of them 'like' Pete's Facebook page.

Rihanna is a world wide superstar who is much more popular than Pete. Here you can see 110 out of my 715 friends 'like' Rihanna compared to just 15 'liking' Pete.

Conclusions and Conventions of Videos in our Genre

The genre we are likely to use varies between indie and rock. These genres are very broad and therefore music videos can vary widely, this is evident from the music videos I have analysed. Indie is very unconventional making each one unique, therefore pinning down conventions is very difficult. Indie music is very broad therefore the music video style is also very broad. In general a lot of music videos in this genre use a lot of improvised performance rather than choreographed, which you would see more in pop music videos. Clothing they wear is a very unique look often wearing skinny jeans and graphic tops. Hair would also be very deliberately styled, often dark rather than blonde.

Here are examples of an indie boy. They don't look very similar, emphasising the point that indie is such a broad genre.

Lighting is often very dark with the use of spot lights. If the music video is set outside, the ambient lighting would usually be with overcast weather rather than a clear sunny sky. Camera work and editing is very much the same as in the majority of music videos, beginning with an establishing shot then cutting from long shots to close ups. Indie music videos also use very obscure camera angles and shots with a lot of handheld filming. The handheld filming is done to create a home made look to the video, the contrast and saturation can also be changed during editing to add the the home made video look.

Here is an example of handheld filming in an Indie music video
